Pichilemu, Chile

Isn’t this a fun name for a town? Mer and I came here en un capricho and it was the best time!

This is a surf. town.

Not many people.

I think us two, Sam (our roomie), and maybe three other people are here at the Sirena Insolente Hostel as guests. Everyone else seems to work here. Well that’s not true…the Brazilian National Surf Team is here.

The hostel is fifteen minutes car ride from the main town so we are at the very end of the road to the beach for food. Honestly, reading that sentence back I am not sure what I was saying. I think what I meant was we are far from the main town, and down here on the surf road there’s very few food options.

When we arrived we got a 6000 peso cab to the hostel and passed so many tiny homes. Countless. So cute! San Diego vibes with the weather and lifestyle but Chilean version, obvi. Got two beers and finally got Patagonia all worked out. We now will be going November 1st – 8th. Honestly, it’s perfect for us. It did take five different people on Whatsapp to achieve this.

We got completo italianos and subpar empanadas for dinner because nothing was open! There was a holiday on Monday that some people in Chile celebrate and some don’t. Plus, next week there is a surf competition so perhaps people are resting up for the influx that is to come. They said it will be a very busy week. Sad that we will miss the competition, because as of today, October 12th, I am a surfing enthusiast. I had one lesson and I am obsessed with it. I felt the wave one time and I will be chasing that thrill for the rest of my life. We had a lesson this morning with Jorge and it went well, even though it was all in Spanish. Plus, Sam said this seems like a hard place to learn, so if we liked this we will love surfing somewhere else too.

We then walked around with Sam, got two goooood unlimited filling empanadas and an acai bowl, and then watched people surf. I just love the ocean, man.

Q: Why did you love surfing so much?
A: I just love how freeing it felt to try something new. There was one time where I actually finally felt the wave under me and for a brief moment it was like I was actually surfing and I need to find that feeling again. I just love the ocean so much so doing something cool in the ocean was a treat. And it was a gorgeous day, the sun was shining down on us the entire time. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow has in store.

Friday the 13th is here and it’s spooky.

Last night Mer, Sam, and I were just hanging in the room until around 21:00 when she said, “I’m going to…get a completo.” Sam then said he’d tag along so I had to go too. I couldn’t sit alone in the room. On the way we noticed Los Piures – Club Social was actually open so we went in and it was a VIBE. Karaoke night! Got a tasty smoked and fried cauliflower sandwich with fries. Strange batter and a tad hard to bit, but I made it work. Good flavor.

Today we surfed again. We hit some bigger waves, still being pushed off from Jorge to start though. But we were successful occasionally again. Mer got yanked and thrown by the ocean and I swear she was tossed 200 feet away – “wipeout” – It was crazy. She also rode a sick wave. I flew off my board and then it fell on my head hard af. Overall, great day! Highs and Lows!

We went to a fancy place, La Loba, and had some tasty food and overcooked seafood. Great tuna poke, deconstructed, and my squid ink (spooky) risotto was bomb, but the calamari on top was not cooked properly. Good flavors on the whole, but the star of the show was the ginger, mint, lemonade. I can’t stop thinking about it. Probably going to get a glizzy for dinner.

We had a nice time here in Pichilemu unwinding and just living. Yes, that is what we’ve been doing this entire time, but it feels different somehow.

We will be going to Santiago mañana, but only for a short while so that will not be the next post. Can anyone guess which city is next???

Bye!
